Inuinnaqtun Translation Services
Inuinnaqtun to English
Inuinnaqtun is an indigenous Inuit language of Canada and a dialect of Inuvialuktun. It is related very closely to Inuktitut, and some scholars, such as Richard Condon, believe that Inuinnaqtun is more appropriately classified as a dialect of Inuktitut. The governments of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut recognize Inuinnaqtun as an official language in addition to Inuktitut. The Official Languages Act of Nunavut, passed by the Senate of Canada on June 11, 2009, recognized Inuinnaqtun as one of the official languages of Nunavut.
Inuinnaqtun is used primarily in the communities of Cambridge Bay and Kugluktuk in the western Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. Outside of Nunavut, it is spoken in the hamlet of Ulukhaktok, where it is also known as Kangiryuarmiutun. It is written using the Latin script.
It has two writing systems: roman letters and a syllabic system developed in the 19th century by European missionaries.
The territorial government recognizes Inuinnaqtun, an Inuktitut dialect spoken in western Nunavut and written in roman letters, as one of the territory’s four main languages (Inuktitut, English, and French are the other three).

Things to Consider
There are a wide range cultural aspects in the Inuinnaqtun speaking world that can vary quite significantly depending on the region. For example, many colors, symbols, and region-specific slang can have unintended implications. It is vital that text be adapted accordingly.
In the translation industry we use the term ‘Transcreation’ to refer to this adaptation of a text to suit the cultural understanding of a specific target audience.
It can be a challenging task for a business to expand into the Inuinnaqtun market. It’s vitally important that marketing and advertising messages are correctly adapted to this audience, while not compromising the original purpose, style, tone, and context of the message. An awareness of local cultural nuances and adapting your text accordingly is why our Inuinnaqtun translators only translate into their native tongue.
