Plains Cree to English
The Cree language is the name for a group of closely related Algonquian languages spoken by approximately 116,000 people, from the Northwest Territories to Labrador. It is the most widely spoken aboriginal language in Canada. The only region where Cree has official status is in the Northwest Territories, together with eight other aboriginal languages.
The two major groups: Nehiyaw and Innu, speak a mutually intelligible Cree dialect continuum, which can be divided by many criteria. In a dialect continuum, “It is not so much a language, as a chain of dialects, where speakers from one community can very easily understand their neighbours, but a Plains Cree speaker from Alberta would find a Quebec Cree speaker difficult to speak to without practice.
Interesting Fact
Plains Cree or the “Y” dialect is spoken is southern Saskatchewan and through central Alberta. The Woods Cree, sometimes referred to as the Rock Cree, is spoken in Manitoba and in north-eastern Saskatchewan, and is referred to as the “Th” dialect.

Things to Consider
Plains Cree Transcreation
There are a wide range of cultural aspects in the Plains Cree speaking world that can vary quite significantly. It is vital that text be adapted accordingly.
In the translation industry we use the term ‘Transcreation’ to refer to this adaptation of a text to suit the cultural understanding of a specific target audience.
It can be a challenging task for a business to expand into the Plains Cree market. It’s vitally important that marketing and advertising messages are correctly adapted to this audience, while not compromising the original purpose, style, tone, and context of the message. An awareness of local cultural nuances and adapting your text accordingly is why our Plains Cree translators only translate into their Indigenous tongue.
